  • Fungi are eukaryotic organisms.
  • They differ from bacteria and other prokaryotes in –
  • Presence of rigid cell walls containing chitin, mannan and other polysaccharides.
  • They posses true nuclei with nuclear membrane and paired chromosomes.
  • They divide asexually, sexually or by both processes.
  • They may be unicellular or multicellular.
  • and cells show various degree of specialization.

 

  • Chronic Histoplasmosis -Also primarily affects the lungs.
  • Less common than acute Histoplasmosis.
  • Usually effects elderly, emphysematous, white men and / Immunosuppressed patients.
  • Clinically appears similar to tuberculosis – patient exhibit cough, fever, weight loss, dyspnea, chest pain, hemoptysis, weakness and fatigue.
  • Chest radiographs show upper lobe infiltrates and cavitations.
