The objective of obturating the root canal is the substitution of an inert filling material in the space previously occupied by the pulp to prevent recurrent infection by the way of break in the continuity of crown of the tooth or circulation(anachoresis).


  • The first successful use–  insulation for undersea cables(1848), and it is used in the manufacture of corks, cement thread, surgical instruments, garments, pipes, and sheathing for ships. Some boats were made entirely of gutta-percha.
  • Gutta-percha golf balls were introduced by  1920, golf balls were called “gutties.’’
  • Gutta-percha has been known to dentistry for over 100 years.
